The Rise of Narcissism

Notes on the point of view of the documentary:
- Social media has resulted in more materialistic values, rising rates of plastic surgery
- People are more self-focused
- Narcissism has been described as an epidemic multiple times throughout the film
- Those who have narcissism can't take other people's perspectives, their personality 'sets them up for failure', they rely on others for their self-esteem
- Technology speeds things up
- There has been a rise in volunteer work since technology has become more prominent
- Social media amplifies the good and the bad: e.g. it can make abusive relationships more significant, however it can also keep people in touch with each other
- You can't disconnect from social media in this age as you are disconnecting from millions of people
- People take the chance to be "cruel" online as it is easier for people to type it rather than say it face to face
- The way we choose to use social media determines whether it's beneficial or not

There are multiple perspectives throughout this documentary regarding social media and if it has a negative or positive effect on those who use it. The title of the documentary is The Rise of Narcissism, and there are many figures in the documentary who support this and claim that social media has a very negative effect on people, however, there are others who say that it is very beneficial and it is impossible to live without. It is confusing as to what the purpose/argument of the documentary is. Throughout the film, the use of statistics and interviews with experts have been included for the purpose of the argument.
